The F-111 was the only American fighter to spend it's entire career without an official name. The crews came up with the name "Aardvark" because of it's long nose, and that became the official name upon its retirement. It was ahead of its time, both politically and technologically. As a technological pathfinder, it suffered many fits and starts before proving itself in combat.
